About Me
As you may have already figured out, my name is Ryan Nguyen, and I'm a rising senior at Johns Hopkins University majoring in Biomedical Engineering (BME) and Computer Science (CS). Ever since a young age, I've always had a passion for learning and innovation as a way of helping others. However, I lacked a clear sense of direction beyond a general preference for STEM fields. That's why I came into Hopkins as a BME major. I was drawn to the major for its highly reputed interdisciplinary nature, hoping that being exposed to such a wide variety of fields would remedy my indecisiveness.
As I progressed through my coursework, I found myself drawn more and more to the computational side of BME. I found that I enjoyed the problem-solving aspect of coding and the ability to create something from nothing. That's why I decided to add a CS minor to my academic pursuits in my sophomore fall. At the time, I still hesitated to fully transition to a major, having not even finished my Intermediate Programming course yet. By the end of that school year though, I had completed Data Structures and was confident in my decision to switch to a double major. From then on, I've continuously strived towards developing my coding skills and practically using them in real world applications.
Outside of academics, I'm a member of the JHU Dragon Boat Club and JHU Medical Technology Network (MTN). I've been a part of the Dragon Boat Club since my freshman year, and I've enjoyed the camaraderie and competition that comes with the sport. For those who may not be familiar with the sport, dragon boating is a team sport that involves paddling a long boat with a dragon head and tail and is NOT the same as rowing. As for MTN, I joined the club in my sophomore year and have been a part of the Workshops committee since, leading workshops on vital engineering topics such as 3D printing, Arduino, and CAD. Both clubs have been a great way for me to meet new people and learn new things outside of the classroom. Other interests of mine include creative writing, music, and golf.
